As we ambled away from Edna's shiny silver Bubble Airstream, Dottie and I made our usual rounds of Happy Trails to check on our guests. The campground buzzed with life, campers everywhere indulging in the tranquil respite of the wilderness.

Children splashed about in the lake, their delighted laughter echoing across the water, while others paddled around in swan-shaped boats, their faces flushed with excitement. The rich scent of campfires wafted through the air, merging with the sweet aroma of roasting marshmallows and grilling hot dogs. Groups of campers lounged around the unlit firepits, sharing stories and laughs, enjoying the gorgeous day. Some were heading off into the woods, their backpacks heavy with supplies, while others were toting kayaks, eager to explore the lake's serene expanse.

We walked past the little bungalows offered by the campground, each a charming cabin nestled amidst the trees. Their spacious back decks overlooked the vast expanse of the forest, a tranquil view that took my breath away every time. These were always gobbled up first by families who wanted to hold reunions, bachelorette and bachelor parties, and other large gatherings. The bungalows were just about as popular as the campers we had available for rent, and our waiting list was at least six months out.

“What on earth is going on in that noggin of yours?” Dottie asked when we walked by the tent sites where a few brave souls were setting up camp within the deeper woods.

"You know," I began, leading the way up the campground toward my camper van, "I can't help but wonder if Edna killed that guy in Arkansas just to get her hands on that Airstream."

Dottie turned to me, her eyebrows raised in surprise. I showed her the picture of the bill of sale I'd found tucked away inside Edna's Airstream naming Lou Dimond the former owner.

"Well, I'll be!" Dottie laughed, shaking her head in amusement at my sleuthing antics. "You left your phone inside on purpose, didn't you?" The smoke danced out of her nostrils as she stopped just shy of my camper to snuff out what little was left of her cigarette before she put the butt in her pocket.

I walked up and opened the door of my little home so Fifi could dart out. She took off toward Dottie, letting Dottie give her one good rub before the dog headed toward all the guests that she could find outside. During the day, Fifi was allowed to roam as she wanted. There wasn’t any danger from critters trying to snack on her, as they wouldn’t show themselves with the sun shining brightly and the people kept them away.

“I guess we will have to keep her on the suspect list, though I was hoping you’d changed your mind.” Dottie shook her head.

By the time we circled back to Dottie's camper, Fifi was running free, her little legs kicking up dust as she dashed around joyously. The sight brought a smile to my face. Dottie and I both watched Fifi for a few moments, chuckling at her antics.
